6 Hacks and Tips for Saving Money on Your Air Conditioning Costs

In areas where the weather is always hot and dry, you can expect an air conditioner to be running 24/7 in nearly all homes. An air conditioning system is necessary to keep individuals and families feeling cool and comfortable and fully protected from the unpleasant and even unhealthy effects of high temperatures.

Having your air conditioner turned on around the clock will certainly increase your monthly energy consumption. This, of course, translates to higher electricity bills every month. But if you live in an area where staying under a roof with the AC turned off will be simply unbearable, you have to find ways to be able to continue using your unit without paying a fortune on your energy bills.

Below are some of the best hacks and tips you can try to lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption and to save some money on your monthly electric bills:

1. Get some electric fans for your home.

Have a ceiling fan installed or a desk fan placed in bedrooms and other frequently used rooms. You can use this appliance while the air conditioner is running. Raise the unit’s temperature a few degrees higher (another tip that can help lower your AC’s energy consumption) and then turn on the fan. It will help cool your body and will consume only a small amount of energy when turned on.

You can also set up the fan to turn on automatically when your air conditioner shuts down. Use the timer or sleep function of your cooling unit and configure your electric fan to turn on when the air conditioner turns off. Set the timers sometime between midnight and dawn, when the temperatures are cooler.

When using a fan, though, keep in mind that you won’t feel the air as cool as the air coming from an air conditioner. However, it will help keep you comfortable since it will blow the heat your body is generating away from you.

2. Turn on the air conditioner only in the rooms that you and other people are in.

This is a simple tip to follow if you have window-type units in your home. It makes no sense to turn on the AC in the kitchen when nobody’s there and everyone is in the living room. If you have a central HVAC system, you can shut the vents in the rooms where there are no people so that the cool air gets re-routed to the rooms in use. You can then increase the temperature a bit to help lower the unit’s electricity consumption.

3. Clean the unit’s air filter weekly.

Air conditioner maintenance companies say that when the filter is clogged and dirty, your unit will work harder. The harder your unit works, the more money it will cost you. As such, take some time every week to take out the filter and clean it.

4. Properly seal windows and doors.

If there are gaps or cracks on your doors and windows, make sure you have them repaired or sealed properly. This is because cold air that escapes has to be replaced. And this simply means money is slipping out of these gaps or cracks. Keep in mind that properly sealed doors and windows will help keep the costly generated cold air inside your home or room. You will save some money on your electricity bills by getting and installing draft blockers for the bottom of your doors.

5. Turn off the lights.

Light bulbs and other lighting features, regardless of the wattage, add extra heat to a room whenever they are turned on. You won’t save money by adding extra heat into a room you are trying to cool, so turn off the lights when you don’t need them.

6. Buy the right air conditioner size for the room.

Lastly, if you’re in the process of buying an AC, make sure you choose one that is the right size for the room. A big, oversized unit which will be placed in a small room would be inefficient and will waste money since it will simply use more energy. On the other hand, a smaller air conditioner placed in a large room will have to constantly work hard and use more energy to keep it cool.

According to AC technicians from Dream Cool Air Condition Systems, it is very important to bear in mind that a properly sized air conditioner will cool the room down at a more energy-efficient rate. You can get more tips for choosing the right AC size from the industry professionals.

Having a well-maintained and clean air conditioner will also help you save money and still enjoy the comfort your unit provides.  Aside from following some simple tips, work with a trusted air conditioner maintenance team to get more out of your cooling system.
